Far too many of our trees are ending up this way. There has been an infestation of emerald ash borers which are not local to this part of the world so they do not have predators. Many trees are being cut down to stop the spread. I have seen way more than the normal number of stumps.
The city is busy planting, too. Here is a row of newly planted trees. From what I understand they are planting several varieties so that should there be an attack by an insect or fungus, not all trees would be affected. It will take a long time for these trees to reach the height and girth of those they are replacing but at least renewal is taking place.
