Too Cold

Nippy Weather

(For my American friends -24°C is -11°F and  - 40°C = -40°F)

A brief cold snap has enveloped our province with extreme cold warnings telling everyone to be sure to dress very warmly if one has to go out. While I did not stay out long (this photo was actually taken through my open car window while parked), I did venture out for a recorder lesson. Italian renaissance and early baroque music warmed me up. It is always a challenge.

Amaryllis

It was a good day to enjoy my newly opened amaryllis. A hot drink, a good book and my indoor garden to chase away any thoughts of freezing temperatures.

Frivolous

I never got to taste one of these little indulgences. They were to celebrate a friend's birthday, but I stayed home - caught by a nasty cold that has had me home-bound for a few days. After many rounds of tea and chicken soup I'm starting to feel human again. This is one seasonal event I would happily do without!

Brrrrr

Brrrrr by susanvg

Yesterday morning the mercury dipped quite low. But this is Canada. Today was slightly better, but the wind helped make it feel colder than it was.  I know people who live in warmer climates who are cold in winter. While I don't love walking in this weather, we do have the possibility of keeping warm.

First of all our houses are insulated, heated and we have double windows. The fact that we do not feel cold all day helps to mitigate the outside cold. Layers are key. Long ago I learned that fashion doesn't matter when it gets cold. As a high school student I went out with knee socks and a tunic which stopped just above my knees. It didn't matter that my coat was long and my boots were high, it was COLD!

Warm Coat

Now I wear long underwear when needed and a couple of layers on top. Add a warm coat, scarf, hat and mittens (not gloves) and I are well insulated. If the wind is bad, I'll add windproof pants. We all develop strategies of how to wear it all, with scarves up over the mouth, a hood up and techniques for turning so you can properly see the traffic and not just the inside of your hood.

Good Boots

Next comes warm boots. If the feet and head are warm everything else seems to feel warmer. So for those who think we suffer in the cold, I know that the dampness in London can sometimes feel worse. And the lower the temperatures here, the more it is likely to be sunny. And that always puts a smile on my face - adding inner warmth.

That Time of Year

I've been laying low. A cold has invaded. It's nothing serious, but it sure knows how to make one feel low energy.

I think I need to buy some sunshine: oranges, strawberries and other warm weather items. I'm sure that's all it would take to chase away the last of this seasonal visitor.

Cat and Mouse

Looking up at the bright blue sky - its colour seems more intense in winter. When the temperature plummets, the sun seems brighter. Cold air can't hold moisture. Bundled up, I enjoyed the cold air. You can dress against cold, but can never undress enough in the heat.

Keeping Warm
Walking was treacherous as our yoyo weather has left ice everywhere under foot. The side streets aren't so bad, but the icy sidewalks on the main thoroughfares are polished from the many passing feet. I envy the young feet that seemed to skip along as I carefully placed each foot.

Winter Lights

Winter Lights by susanvg

The wind had bite creating cold much harsher than the temperature indicated. I walked on an icy moonscape created by snow then rain then sudden cold. Taking off my glove I snapped this photo and my finger tips immediately objected.

Playing with Light

I played with the light - moving my camera to create an abstract image. Or was it just that I was trying to bring back circulation to my fingers by moving a bit?
