Definitely Winter

A record snowfall for one day - 45 cm of snow fell on Montreal. For much of the day it seemed to be going sideways with strong gusts whipping it, blowing it into high drifts.



Today these same trees enjoy the bright blue winter skies. The river gleams in the distance. There are piles of snow everywhere. I am very glad to have moved - no more shovelling, scraping, and salting.




There is nothing quite so beautiful as the day after a snow storm. The fresh fallen snow sparkles  and the city looks pristine.

Our first real winter storm arrived, with winds pushing the falling snow to create white-outs. As I ventured out late in the afternoon to walk to the metro, the snow sparkled under the city lights.




Driving was treacherous with many accidents reported, and walking was a challenge. But it is magical to walk with the snowflakes dancing around you and everything a pristine white.

The wind blew all day, rapidly changing the weather. The morning sun was soon covered by clouds, first light then ever darker. Later the rain, driven by the wind, pelted down, sometimes almost sideways. By 5:00 these dark clouds hovered, threateningly, but the sun came through some thinning patches. I love the contrasts in light this created. Everything light-coloured was highlighted, everything dark seemed to grow darker still.
