A visit to Wychwood Farmers Market was a feast for the eyes. Beets in every colour, fresh bright greens.



There were many kinds of mushrooms



And prepared food - everything from these unique sushis to gluten free baked goods. Chocolate, cookies, sausages, - everything fresh.



Even flowers were featured. And then a visit to Baker and Scone.

I met my sister-in-law along with her husband and my son and we had a delightful meal together. I learned some of the back story about the film;  we updated each other on family and  reminisced about past events.

Then back to the airport for a flight home. Billy Bishop airport (on Toronto Island)  is just off downtown Toronto. Now there is a tunnel under the short stretch of water; in the past one had to take a two minute ferry ride. The views as the plane taxis to the runway are quite something. An amazing couple of days!

The market is overflowing with apples as the orchards are harvesting their bounty. The diversity of sizes, colours and flavours sometimes makes choosing a challenge. I'll be baking apple cake and making applesauce. I have to deal with the bags I bought. What a delicious problem!

The market is opening up to the air. Window protection has come down and these temporary structures have been erected. Within a few days they will be full of flats of flowers, pots of perennials and many varieties of vegetables. Montreal's gardeners will converge on the many gardening centres to make their yearly selections.
Today I purchased fruit and vegetables, most of it grown far afield. Soon the stalls will feature local produce, the taste so much richer than the well-travelled goods here now. The changes of seasons always bring welcome delights.

I was at the market today. There are stores that operate all winter. The outdoor stalls won't be open for another few weeks. Much as I would love to buy local produce, most of what we have is imported, especially this time of year. But what an abundance! With a weekend of holidays coming the stalls seemed stocked more than ever, with varieties of vegetables rarely seen, from miniature cauliflower of different hues, to exotic eggplants. There are tomatoes of every colour and potatoes of every shape. As usual, I carried home too much and will be spending a lot of time in the kitchen cooking. But what a pleasure to set a table with freshly made food.

And, of course, I bought flowers - fresh cut tulips from Holland. The man at the stall swore he had been there and back this morning. That is the other part I love about going to the market. The sales people are friendly, not just efficient. I often go back to the same stall for my vegetables. They know me know and there is always time taken for a friendly hello and a chat. A trip to the supermarket is a chore; a trip to the market is an adventure.
