Local Produce

The local strawberries have started. They are not quite at their peak sweetness, but this week's hot weather should sweeten them up. We have been enjoying Quebec asparagus. They will soon be over, but with new strains of strawberries, I'll be enjoying them all summer.



This time of year, no visit to Atwater Market is complete without gawking at the multitude of flowers for sale - both cut flowers and for flowers for planting in gardens. Now that I just have a couple of pots on a balcony, I linger longer.

Land of Plenty

While on TV we see pictures of famine, here we live in the land of plenty. The markets are overflowing with fresh produce. The peaches are at their prime, sweet and juicy. New strains of strawberries ripen throughout the summer. It's that time of year when I start nesting, putting food away for the colder days. I will be making jam and ratatouille and whatever else I fancy. The market beckons.

In winter, it is important to have strategies to get through the grey days. Participating in winter sports definitely makes winter enjoyable. Eating sunshiny fruit is another strategy. The colour and flavour bring a burst of warmer climates.
I love the look and taste of blood oranges. The first time I saw one was in Italy and I thought the orange was spoiled. That was years ago and I have since learned to enjoy them.
