And Getting Home

This river has travelled from Lake Ontario. We traced its course from Montreal to the Gulf which the west side of Newfoundland faces. Now we are going upstream, back home.

A quiet walk on a Sunday morning past the church for breakfast at our favourite restaurant. Then we set out - back to the traffic near the city, back to the noises of the city, back to reality.

Greeted by a rainbow, painted like a watercolour on the sky.



Back to the beauty that is all around us. Back to the many activities that make my life here rich from work, to music, to concerts and many other intellectual pursuits. And life with Paul at home. Travel enriches. It takes time to process all we have done and experienced and to solidify the memories through rehashing, telling our stories and just sitting back and remembering.

The Internet - the pot of gold

On sunny days the sun hits the bevel on a mirror on the wall and splits into a rainbow of colour. It fell across my computer and I thought about the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Not so many years ago we simply didn't have access to the information, the virtual relationships, the virtual conferences, the many ways of connecting and learning. My computer really leads to the pot of gold.

The Global Education Conference is taking place this week. I managed to participate in a few sessions. It is amazing what I can access from my home at no cost - a pot of golden ideas, and gems to ponder and share.

Even in the light rain you can see the waves of mountains, row upon row. We crossed the bridge to the Isle of Skye from Kyle of Lochalsh, but a curtain of cloud came down, obscuring our views.

It is fascinating to me how quickly weather changes in this part of the world. It can be sunny in one spot  with cloud cover just a short way off and rain.

This can result in lots of rainbows.

We went to see Eilean Donan Castle which is supposed to be the most photogenic castle in Scotland, but cloud obscured the mountains behind.



But sometimes it is nice to see these venues cloaked in mystery. It is easier to picture the events of the past, their echoes in the mist.

It's so important to stop in those moments to appreciate the ephemeral events. Rainbows are special for their fleeting existence.

I think as I start the school year with its frenzy of work I have to remind myself to stop and just enjoy the moment. There may not be a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, but there is a golden moment when you take the time to appreciate it.

There are days when you just know you are not going to get that photo or find that story. I have a large mirror which the sunlight hits in the afternoon sending rainbows off its bevelled edges.I liked the way this one seemed to streak out of the radiator like a flash of lightning.
I admire Sheherezade ever more with her ability to weave her stories each night for 1001 nights. Now she had strong motivation; my motivation to photograph and write is self-imposed. I suppose the flashes of ideas would be fleshed out and the need to find suitable subjects would push me no matter how tired I was if I were under the threat of execution.
