Spice Drawer

Variety is the Spice of Life

Photo: September 12, 2016

This somewhat messy drawer is where we keep our herbs and spices - flavourings that enhance our food. I tend to fall back on old reliables but every so often I venture into the less used seasonings. Then there are those we use fresh: garlic, ginger, fresh herbs. The dried versions just don't have the same flavour, the same oomph. This time of year I seem to get into nesting mode - cooking and baking as if I need to fill the larder before the cold sets in. My forays to the market take a lot of will power so I don't buy in excess. I no longer have a large freezer to fill. But I will be filling as much as I can...

Herbs

Finally sunshine, finally planting. I couldn't resist buying this container full of herbs. Summer is salad time. These will find their way into food adding brightness to the flavours and pleasure to the consumers!

Day 90: The Spice of Life

Day 90: The Spice of Life, originally uploaded by susanvg.

I have had this "lazy Susan" for my spices for many years; it wobbles a bit, but I love to be able to turn it and see all my jars and containers. Cooking is more fun when you add a bit of this and a bit of that. However, it gets hard to replicate the flavours when you don't measure and remember just what you used.

The spices come from so many places; the flavours speak of exotic lands. It's fun to bring the aromas of the world to the dinner table.
