Out in the Cold

Our hardy sculptures don't mind the cold. This computer whiz sits out day and night, winter and summer, engrossed in his screen, fast food sustaining him. His concentration is such that the squirrel has managed to take his share from the bag.



Here is a detail of the sculpture - frozen in time in more ways than one. I was not willing to linger long. The wind was whipping up the snow creating a feeling of cold that was colder than the thermometer indicated. I'll have to go back in warmer weather to find the artist's name. S/he deserves to be acknowledged.

Addendum:
I was back in the area today in much nicer weather. It reminded me that revisiting (art, books, films) always provides another layer of understanding. Here's what I found. The sculpture is by Cedric Loth and was done in 2011. And what is the boy so intent on? Here is the computer screen:

My cat sometimes appears to be less than brilliant. He walks out of a room into another and then meows because no one is there. But my daughter claims that his mind is really scheming about much more important things.



He has recently shown his "genius" when working with computers. He loves to sit on or near them as they give off heat (at least that is my interpretation). However, he has been known to press just the right keys to produce interesting results. On this occasion he managed to cause all the icons to grow larger. He frequently launches programs on my spouse's computer as his little paws leap from the desk to the computer to the warm lap. My daughter claims he once launched VoiceOver which caused her computer to talk to her. Does he plot and plan these diabolical tricks? Or is he just trying to tell us that contact with cats is far better than contact with computers?

Back when I was teaching in the late 90s,I had a Mac G3 with a matching monitor that sat on my desk. One of my students appeared on day with this clock which so closely resembled the monitor. They sat on my desk together at work. Here it is on my latest Mac - a MacBook Pro.
