Changes

Kitchen Stuff

I'm feeling dated
I lived through avocado green
A mixer sat on my counter
Beside my harvest gold stove

Almond was a relief
From those murky shades
For my next kitchen
I happily bought white appliances

A riot of colour is back
As silicone tools take over
I balk at this brilliant rainbow
Reminiscent
of clothes I wore in the seventies

My metal appliances
and wooden spoons
Sit proudly on my counter
No need to change
I know this is just a passing fashion

Yellow and Blue

I love when people add a little individuality to homes. The colours just brightened up the street. These are modest homes on a modest street, but they are obviously cared for by the owners.

I also noticed the "No circulars" sign in the windows. They, like me, are tired of the amount of paper that comes in, only to be put directly into the recycling bin.

Mood Lighting

Dinner in a restaurant in Toronto to celebrate a birthday - not mine. I'm a summer baby. These lights and glass hung from the ceiling with the background colour changing constantly.

I've read a few articles lately about colour and its effect on us. Here is an interesting infographic about colour in web sites. Or have a look at this blog post and infographic on the psychology of colour.

Day 60: Indoor Sunshine

Day 60: Indoor Sunshine, originally uploaded by susanvg.

It's about this time of year that I start to crave colour. The monochromatic winterscape, though beautiful starts to lose its magic. I need yellows and oranges - the bright shades of warmth. I have many flowering plants in my house, but most are pinks and whites - lovely orchids. This kalanchoe exudes the sunny shades that speak spring to me. This morning I could feel the warmth of the sun through my windows; a bright red cardinal sang at the top of a nearby tree. But the outdoor temperatures are still below freezing and the snow and ice blanket the lawns. No signs of spring yet. So I find colour inside, a reminder of what is soon to come.
