Ruffled Daffodils

While the snow is receding, it leaves the accumulated winter dirt, mud and brown grass behind. Outdoors the shoots are just starting to poke out of the ground. I stopped in at the Westmount Conservatory where there was a show of spring blooms. What a delightful place with people enjoying the colours as they sat on benches or strolled around. We are colour-starved this time of year.

Tulip

Young and old delighted in the abundance of colour. And what a peaceful atmosphere! I must take a book there some day and just sit and enjoy.

Peer Inside

I'm told they change the exhibit four times a year. For now, it was delightful to get an advance peek at spring possibilities. It will be a while before I see these growing outdoors!

First Shoots

When spring decides to come the snow melts quickly. Shoots in many gardens are already beginning to show. If you look carefully, you will see a tinge of purple where the crocuses are starting.

Snow Drops

In sheltered gardens, the snowdrops have opened. Spring doesn't wait for all the snow to be gone to get busy with growing.

Snowy Spring

A snowfall on Tuesday blanketed the city. Spring snow is heavy, saturated with water. Big puddles collect at street corners making walking a choose your own adventure. Walking through the park is pretty, but walking on busy streets can mean a thorough soaking as cars hit the puddles sending cascades of slush out onto pedestrians. The days are longer; warmer weather is coming. In the meantime, we may as well enjoy the beauty of fresh snow.

Wrapped Bush

My friend Jen brought my attention to the strange shapes wrapped bushes take. Wrapping is done to protect the bushes from the weight of snow, and in some cases, from the salt that splashes as cars pass.

This one stood in a row of several bushes, but it was the only one to catch my eye. I see a woman in peasant garb standing here - enjoying the bit of sun before the snow comes again. She will be transformed in about a month as she sheds her wrappings to once again be a bush.

There's a Story Here

Dinner at a neighbourhood restaurant with friends. The kitchen area was separated from the dining area by a counter. Our table abutted the counter. As the owner prepared desserts, they were nose level to two of the diners at our table. My friend kept jokingly pretending to snatch a dessert for our table.

Well - a nearby table was celebrating a birthday and they had brought this rich, chocolate cake. After the pieces were brought to their table, the other owner, with a sleight of hand, deposited this piece on our table. But we were not to tell - as the other table had asked for the remainder of the cake to be wrapped up. With great laughter (and four spoons) we each indulged.

We enjoyed the meal, though many of the menu items were richer than the food I like. Will we go back to the restaurant? Of course - it is a delight to eat in a place where the owners have a sense of humour, where the customers are more than a source of revenue.

Flowers at the Market

After two weeks housebound with bronchitis, it was good to get out. I went shopping at the market and resisted temptation to take some of these home. Somehow March is always a time when I crave colour. Much of the snow has melted, but the city has a grimy feel as the melting snow leaves behind the dirt.
March is a tease. Some days feel like winter while others hint at the coming of spring.

Frivolous

I never got to taste one of these little indulgences. They were to celebrate a friend's birthday, but I stayed home - caught by a nasty cold that has had me home-bound for a few days. After many rounds of tea and chicken soup I'm starting to feel human again. This is one seasonal event I would happily do without!
