Spot the Butterfly

Spot the Butterfly, originally uploaded by susanvg.
A visit to "Butterflies are Free" at the Montreal Botanical Gardens kept me smiling for a long time. It's a magical experience as the butterflies flit around, stopping to feed from the riot of flowers or to rest.

So delicate, their thin legs perch while they reach into the flowers, imbibing the nectar. Some flap their wings so they seem a blur as they drink. Others seem to perch.

The sun was streaming into the greenhouse giving plenty of warm spots to stop and soak it in.

Huge moths, hatching from cocoons, spread their wings and flew off.

These and more butterfly photographs can be found here.
With much difficult news from around the world, we need to find our oases of peace and tranquility. This was certainly one of them, even with the multitude of people who were also enjoying the experience.

  1. Congratulations, you got some beautiful shots here. It is indeed a magical experience. I will definitely return next year, hopefully during a time when there are less people.

  2. These butterfly shots are so delighful! I'm hoping to plan a trip to Callaway Gardens in Georgia this summer. They have butterfly gardens there and the last time I went I remember getting a picture of a little girl with a butterfly resting on her finger (that was with my point and click!). It will be fun! Your photographs are really terrific and they continue to just get better and better!

  3. Your shots remind me of the Butterfly Pavilion here in Denver. So many lovely butterflies to watch. Those moths are spectacular, too.

  5. Amazing colours and also camouflages. Thank you for these beautiful shots, as butterflies in the wild are sadly getting rarer and rarer in many places.
